(Cl. 15-164) This invention relates to brushes, and more particularly to a toilet bowl brush.

Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of a brush which is particularly adapted for cleaning toilet bowls and which is so formed as to make it easy to clean under the rim of a bowl as well as to clean the outlet part of the bowl; the provision of a brush of this class which is so formed as to have a hook-like portion at the end of the handle of the brush which is adapted to be hooked under the rim of a bowl and then moved about to clean under the rim of the bowl; and the provision of a brush such as described which is economical to manufacture. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a brush of this invention, a part of the handle of the brush being broken away;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged portion of Fig. 1 with the brush bristles removed and illustrated in phantom only, in order better to show the formation of the brush; and,

Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, a brush of this invention is shown to comprise a wood handle 1 and a head 3. The handle, a portion of which is shown broken away in Figs. 1 and 2, may be about one foot long, for example. It is not necessary that it be made of wood. The head comprises an elongate twisted wire brush element which consists of a pair of wires 5 and 7 twisted around bristles 9. Bristles are provided throughout an intermediate portion of the length of the wires, and the end portions thereof, which are designated 11, are bristlefree.

The twisted wires 5 and 7 of the brush element 3 are bent at the center of the length of the element in such manner as to provide a bristled loop L having sides 13 which diverge from the brush tip 15 constituted by the central portion of the length of the element. The twisted wires 5 and 7 of the brush element are further bent at the ends of the sides 13 of the loop in such manner as to provide re-entrant bristled portions 17 which extend back into the loop L from the ends of the sides 13 of the loop and which lie within the confines of the loop and come together at 19 within the loop adjacent its open end. The loop L itself is bent as appears in Figs. 2 and 4 to be curved and thereby to present an arcuate convex outer surface 21 and an arcuate inner concave surface 23. The twisted wires of the element are fur- 2,878,501 Patented Mar. 24, 1 959 ice ther bent in such manner that the bristle-free end portions 11 lie side-by-side substantially throughout their length and constitute a terminal part having a portion extending outwardly from the concave side 23 of the curved loop, the bristle-free end portions 11 themselves being further bent to provide an end portion 25 extending in the direction away from the brush tip back toward the open end of the loop L. This end portion 25 extends at an angle to the outwardly extending portion of parts 11 and is spaced from the concave side of the loop L. The end portion 25 is attached to one end of the handle with a ferrule as indicated at 27. The handle extends in line with terminal end portion 25 in the di rection away from the brush tip 15. A length of plastic tubing 29 may be applied to the end portions 11. v

As appears in Figs. 2 and 4, the tions 11 and the ends of the sides 13 of the loop and the re-entrant portions 17 form a hook-like portion at the end of the handle which is adapted to be hooked under the rim R of a toilet bowl B as shown in Fig. 2, and moved about to clean under the rim. At the same time, the arcuate convex outer surface 21 of the brush moves about on the interior bowl surface for cleaning it. The brush tip 15 is adapted to be entered into the outlet part of the bowl for cleaning it.

In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.

As various changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

I claim:

1. A brush comprising a handle and a head, said head comprising an elongate brush element having bristles throughout an intermediate portion of its length and bristle-free end portions, .said element being formed to provide a bristled loop having sides which diverge from a brush tip constituted by the central portion of the length of the element, re-entrant bristled portions which extend back into the loop from the ends of the sides of the loop and which lie within the confines of the loop and come together within the loop adjacent its open end, said bristle-free end portions lying side-by-side substantially throughout their length and constituting a terminal part, said terminal part being formed to have a portion extending outwardly from one face of the loop and an end portion extending at an angle to said outwardly extending portion spaced from the loop and extending in the direction back toward the open end of the loop away from the brush tip, and said terminal end portion being connected at its outer end to one end of the handle, said handle extending in line with said terminal end portion in the direction away from the brush tip, said bristle-free end portions and said ends of the sides of the loop and said re-entrant portions forming a hooklike portion at said end of the handle.

A brush comprising a handle and a head, said head comprising an elongate brush element having bristles throughout an intermediate portion of its length and bristle-free end portions, said element being formed to provide a bristled loop having sides which diverge from a brush tip constituted by the central portion of the length of the element, re-entrant bristled portions which extend back into the loop from the ends of the sides of the loop and which lie within the confines of the loop and come together within the loop adjacent its open end, said loop itself being curved thereby to present an arcuate convex outer surface, said bristle-free end portions lying side-by-side substantially throughout their length and conbristle-free end por-- .3 stituting a terminal part, said terminal part being formed to have a portion extending outwardly from the concave side of the curved loop and an end portion extendingat an 'angle to said outwardly extending portion spaced fromthe-concave side of the loop and extending in the direction back toward the open end of the loop away from the brush tip, and said terminal end portion being connected at its outer end to one end of the handle, said handle extending in line with said terminal end portion in the direction away from the brush tip, said bristle-free end portions and said ends of the sides of the loop and said re-entrant portions forming a hooklike portion at said end of the handle.

A brush comprising a handle and a head, said head consisting of an elongate twisted wire brush element consisting of a pair of wires twisted around bristles, said brush element having bristle-free end portions, the twisted wires of said element being bent at the center of its length in such manner as to provide a bristled loop having sides which diverge from a brush tip constituted by the central portion of the length of the element, the twisted wires of said element being further bent at the ends of said sides in such manner as to provide re-entrant bristled portions which extend back into the loop from the ends of the sides of the loop and which lie within the confines of the loop and come together within the loop adjacent its open end, the twisted wires of said element being further bent in such manner that said bristle-free end portions lie side-by-side substantially throughout their length and constitute a terminal part, said terminal part itself being bent to have a portion extending outwardly from one face of the loop and an end portion extending at an angle to said outwardly extending portion spaced from the loop and extending in the direction back toward the open end of the loop away from the brush tip, and said terminal end portion being connected at its outer end to one end of the handle, said handle extending in line with said terminal end portion in the direction away from the brush tip, said bristle-free end portions and said ends of the sides of the loop and said re-entrant portions forming a hook-like portion at said end of the handle.

A brush comprising a handle and a head, said head consisting of an elongate twisted wire brush element consisting of a pair of wires twisted around bristles, said brush element having bristle-free end portions, the twisted wires of said element being bent at the center of its length in such manner as to provide a bristled loop having sides which diverge from a brush tip constituted by the central portion of the length of the element, the twisted wires of said element being further bent at the ends of said sides in such manner as to provide re-entrant bristled portions which extend back into the loop from the ends of the sides of the loop and which lie within the confines of the loop and come together within the loop adjacent its open end, said loop itself being curved thereby to present an arcuate convex outer surface, the twisted wires of said element being further bent in such manner that said bristle-free end portions lie side-byside substantially throughout their length and constitute a terminal part, said terminal part itself being bent to have a portion extending outwardly from the concave side of the curved loop and an end portion extending at an angle to said outwardly extending portion spaced from the concave side of the loop and extending in the direction back toward the open end of the loop away from the brush tip, and said terminal end portion being connected at its outer end to one end of the handle, said handle extending in line with said terminal end portion in the direction away from the brush tip, said bristle-free end portions and said ends of the sides of the loop and said re-entrant portions forming a hook-like portion at said end of the handle.
