STOVEPIPE*CLEA1\TER.
Application led January 9, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Serial No. 601,706.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANGUs ALEXANDER MACLENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buena Vista, in the county of Chaffee and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Oleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to stove pipe cleaners and has for. its object to provide an ex tremely simple, efficient and durable device of this character whereby stove pipe flues may be easily and quickly cleaned.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a cleaner disposed for movement through the stove pipe consisting of a rod having a scraper fixed to one end thereof for engagement with the walls of the pipe, and means arranged in the pipe about the rod to prevent the escape of soot into the room.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through a. stove pipe and chimney, showing the arrangement of my improved cleaner in the pipe; F ig. 2 is an enlarged detail section through the packing sleeve or jointthrough which the cleaner rod is disposed; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cleaner removed.
Referring in detail to the drawing P designates a stove pipe and W the chimney wall into the iue of which one end of the pipe extends. The other end of the pipe is connected to the stove in the usual manner.
E designates the elbow which connects the vertical and horizontal portions of the stove p1 ne.
1My improved cleaning device is movably disposed through the elbow of the stove pipe and comprises a rod 5 to theninner end of which the scraper is secured. This scraper is preferably of semicircular form and comprises a sheet of asbestos or steel wool 6. This sheet is arranged between the rigid metal plates 7. The plates 7 are also of scmicircular form but of slightly less di,
ameter than the sheet 6 so that the edge portions of said sheet extend beyond the edges of said plates for contact with the walls of the stove pipe.
In order to prevent the escape of soot and dust into the room or apartment, in the operation of the cleaner, va packing joint or sleeve is arranged in the elbow section E of the stove pipe. This sleevel comprises the two sections 8 and 9, said section 8 having a reduced exteriorly threaded portion 10 for engagement in the interiorly threaded end 11 of the sleeve section 9. The latter sleeve section is also provided at the base of the threads 11 with a chamber 12 which is adapted to be filled with asbestos wool or other suitable packing material. Each of the sections is provided with a longitudinal bore 13 through which the cleaner rod 5 extends and is adapted to be moved.
In assembling the device, the sleeve sec* tion 9 is first arranged upon the cleaner rod 5 and said rod is then passed through the opening in the wall of the elbow E. The other sleeve section 8 is then disposed on said rod and the threaded extension 10 thereof disposed through the opening in the elbow and engaged in the threaded bore 11 of the section 9. The end of the section 8 engages the packing material arranged in the chamber 12 of the sleeve section 9 and packs the same closely therein about the rod 5 whereby the liability of dust and soot escaping through` the bores of the sleeve sections around the rod is prevented. Upon the outer end of the rod a nger ring 14 is formed through which the operators linger is adapted to be inserted.
In the use of the device, the operator moves the rod 5 longitudinally in the stove pipe between the chimney flue and the elbow, and during such movement engages the projecting edge portion of the intermediate liexible sheet 6 of the scraper, with the walls of the pipe. The soot and dirt which has collected in the pipe will thus be scraped outwardly into the. vertical portion of the pipe and bedeposited in the stove from which it may be easily removed. The scraper is adapted to be larranged at any desired angle upon the end of the rod 5, and may be fixed thereon in any desired manner. The rod 5 may be moved inany direct-ion within the stove pipe so as to engage the edge of the scraper with the entire inner surface of said pipe. In the same manner the chimney flue may also be cleaned.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and operation of my improved stove pipe cleaner will be readily understood.
The device is simple in construction and may be easily and quickly arranged in operative position.
The principal feature of my invention resides in the manner of mounting the movable rod in the elbow of the pipe whereby the same may be readily moved without danger of the soot escaping into the room.
While I have shown and described the particular form and construction of the various parts, it will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is A device of the character described comprising two sleeve sections each having a longitudinal bore, one ofsaid sleeve sections having an interior annular packing chamber intermediate of its ends, the bre of said sleeve section at one end being'enlarged and provided with screw threa'ds, the other of .said sleeve sections having a reduced eX- lterlorly screw threaded extension concentric with the bore of said section, said extension being adapted for insertion through a supporting wall and for engagement in the interiorly threaded end of the other sleeve section to compress the packing in the interior chamber thereof, and a cleaner rod longitudinally movable through the bores of said sleeve sections.
Intestimony whereof Ihereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
