Description

G. R. PAALEN. DOUBLE WALLED VESSEL. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 27, 1908.
928,002. Patented July 13, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV ROBERT PAALEN, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN THERMOS BOTTLE COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DOUBLE-WALLED VESSEL.
Specification 0t Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Application filed June 27, 1908. Serial No. 440,671.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, GUSTAV ROBERT PAALEN, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Billed Vessels, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to improvements in a double walled vessel comprising inner and outer walls united with each other only at the mouth ofthe vessel and inclosing between them a rarefied space, and has for its objects to provide certain improvements in the means for inclosing the said vessel.
,I In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the vessel and its jacket, half in side elevation and half in vertical central section, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line AA of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the cover, Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the upper member of the jacket, Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation of the lower member of the jacket, and Fig. is a View in side elevation of the cup. j The outer wall '1 and the inner wall 2 of v the vessel are united with each other only at the mouth of the vessel and inclose between them a vacuum space '3. Stifiening blocks 4- are interposed between the inner and outer walls at a distance from the mouth of the vessel for holding the inner wall spaced from the outer wall. a
A ring. comprising inner and outer Walls 5-and 6 and an intermediate portion 7 cmbraces the mouth of the vessel and is permanently secured thereto by some suitable material 8, for instance, cement. A suitable stopper 9 is provided for the mouth of the vessel,,which stopper engages the inner face of the inner wall 5 of the mouth protecting ring thus insuring an absolutely tight closure. I V
. The upper member 10 of the acket 1s provided with an-inwardly turned lip 11 overlapping the mouth protecting ring. The
lower member 12 of the jacket which embraces the bottom of the vessel has a removable engagement with the upper member of the ack et, as, for instance, by provldmg the bottom edge of the upper member of the jacket with an annular groove 13 having bottom openings 1% at intervals therein for pern'iitting theinsertion of lugs 15 on the lower member 12. A slight turning movement of the members with respect to each other will bring the studs 15 into the uninterrupted portions of the said groove 13; A yielding support 16 for the vessel is interposed between the bottom of the vessel and the bottom of the lower member 12 of the jacket- A suitable drinking cup 17 is reinovably fitted over the lower member 12 of the jacket and is held thereon by friction.
jacket with respect'to each other serves to interlock the two. This cover 18 is provided with a device for holding the stopper within -the mouth of the bottle against displacement,
which device comprises a pressure screw 22 having a pressure plate 23 engaging the top of the stopper, the said pressure screw having a screw threaded engagement through the top of the cover. The cover may also be provided with a suitable handle 24 hinged thereto.
, Means are provided for spacing the outer wall of the vessel from the jacket, which means, in the present instance, comprises an annular corrugated band 25.
When double walled vacuum vessels of the wide mouthed type, here shown, are made as is usually the case, of glass it-is diflicult to make the mouth truly circular, and hence, to insure a tight fit of the-stopper. The ring 5, 6, 7 is made with its walls 5, 6 sufiiciently far apart to permit of considerable variations in the shape of the mouth edge from a true circle, orto allow of some lateral adjustment of the ring on the edge of the vessel. The stopper, therefore, is received in the truly circular ring, and always tlghtly The screw 22 acts as a locking device, since it bpth forces the stopper into the ring and at the same time tends to draw asunder the cover 18 and jacket member 10. against the action of the holding means provided, thus preventing detachment of said cover and member until said screw is loosened.
By removing the cup-shaped member 12, the vessel canbe easily withdrawn from the inclosing jacket for substitution or repair.
What I claim is 1. A double vwalled vacuum vessel having its inner wall contracted at the mouth and the corresponding portion of its outer wall a right cylinder, in combination with a double flanged'ring constructed to receive the edge of said mouth.
2. A double walled vacuum vessel having its inner wall contracted at the mouth and the corresponding portion of its outer wall a right cylinder, in combination with a double flanged ring constructed to receive the edge of said mouth and having its flanges separated by a distance greater than the distance between the inner surface of the inner wall and the outer surface of the outer wall, and means interposed between said outer wall and the outer flange of said ring for securing said ring in place.
3.- The combination with a double walled vacuum vessel, of a jacket completely inclosing said vessel comprising a body portion and a cover therefor, means for connecting said body and cover, a stopper constructed to enter the mouth of said vessel, and a screw extending through said cover and cooperating with said stopper: whereby on setting up said screw said stopper is forced into said mouth, and said cover and body are drawn tightly together at the connecting joint.
4. The combination of a vessel, a stopper constructed to be inserted in the mouth of. said vessel, a cap engaging with said Vessel and a spring interposed between said cap and said stopper and acting to press said cap and said stopper apart,'and means on said cap for regulatingthe tension of said spring.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name m 40 presence oftwo witnesses, this sixth day of June 1908.
