Be it known that I, JENNY W. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Dress-Shield Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a fastener for dress-shields, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device for the purpose specified.

In accordance with this invention the fastenercomprises two'cooperatingjaws,between which the shield is inserted, .and both of which are attached to a body-piece which is adapted to be sewed or otherwise secnredto the garment. One of the jaws referred to may and preferably will be provided with side flanges having notches, teeth, or serrations, and the otherjaw may and preferably will be made as a spring-tongue which extends between the toothed sides of the other jaw. The spring-tongue or movablej aw may be provided with a raised or upwardly-curved portion to increase the holding power of the movable jaw, and the end of the said movable jaw may be notched for a purpose as will be described. These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

Figure 1 represents a suflicient portion of a garment provided with a shield attached thereto by fasteners embodying this invention to enable it to be understood; Fig. 2, a top or plan view, on an enlarged scale, of the fastener removed; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the fastener shown in Fig. 2, and-Fig. 4 a developed view of the fastener.

The dress-shield fastener herein shown is made from a sheet-metal blank (shown in Fig. 4) which is cut or stamped out with a suitable die, preferably from a piece or sheet of spring-steel, and which comprises a body portion a, adapted to be sewed or otherwise attached to the dress or other garment b, the said body portion being shown as provided with holes a for this purpose. The body portion a has extended from its opposite ends arms (:1 e, which are adapted to be bent or folded back over the body portion to form holding-jaws for the shield f. The arm d is made wider than the arm 6, and its opposite edges are preferably provided with teeth, notches, or serrations g, and the toothed sides of the arm cl are designed to be bent substantially at right angles thereto,as shown in Fig. 3,.so as to form toothed flanges h on the jaw d, between which the spring jaw or arm 6 is extended.

The spring tongue or jaw a may be notched at its end, as at 't', and may, if desired, be curved foraportion of its length, as at j, (see Fig. 3,) or the curved portion j and the notch 11 may be omitted.

In operation the spring tongue or jaw e is depressed and the shield f is slipped in under the toothed flanges h, and when properly inserted the spring tongue or arm 6 is released, which resumes its normal position (shown in Fig. 3) and grips the shield between it and the jaw 01. The curved portion 3' of the spring tongue or jaw 6 assists to hold the shield, and the notched end '6 of the said jaw also assists to hold the shield from working backward out of the fastener.

When it is desired to remove the'shield, the tongue or jaw e may be depressed and the shield may be drawn forward and sidewlse.

In practice it is preferred to use two fasteners after the manner shown in Fig. 1, wherein the opposite ends of the shield are shown as engaged with said fasteners. It will be understood that the fasteners are designed to be permanently fixed to the dress or other garment and that the shield may be readily and quickly removed and replaced by new ones Without any trouble. The fasteners in practice are made small and do not inconvenience the wearer in any respect.

A fastener of the character described, comprising a body portion adapted to be attached to a garment, a jaw extended from one end of said body portion back over the same and provided with side flanges, and a second jaw extended from the opposite end of the body portion back over the same and cooperating with the said side flanges to grip the material inserted between them, substan tially as described.
