Description
Patented Jo o 21, 1939 UNITED STATES 2,183,934 cor! snna'r Howard E. Collins, La Grange; alslgnor to Ditto, Incorporated, Chicago, Ill., a corporation of West -No Drawing. Application March 5, 1938, Serial No liiidlt 11 Claims. '(0i. 41-413) This invention relates to an improvement i copy sheets and more particularly to master cop sheets, adapted to give designs of higher col intensity in a duplicatingprocess wherein a de- 5 sign to be reproduced is applied to a master copy ,sheet by typewriting and the like, the design on. the master copy sheet contacted with a duplicat ing' mass, and copies madeby. contacting copy sheets in succession with the design on the 10 duplicating mass.
In the usual ,hectograph duplicating process a g a design formed of a water and glycerin soluble dye is applied to an ordinary paper sheet such as bontLpaper to form a master copy. The de-- sign on the mastercopy is then contacted with a duplicating mass consisting of gelatin, glycerin *and water, whereupon the dye of the design is largely transferred to the hectograph mass, form- 2 ing a reverse image of the design. Copies are then made by contacting copy sheets withthe design on the'hectograph mass. Where the dye used in forming the. designs is not'readily soluble v in water and glycerin, the colol'-oi the design on 5' the copies is of poor intensity after only a few copies have been made. This is particularly true of black basic nigrosine, and also of highly light absorbent combinations of basic as the mixtures of fuchine and malachite green in the proportion of 1:2. I
In accordance with this inventicnthere is distributed on the surface of a copy sheet a glycerin miscible solvent which has a greater solvent a power thanglycerin for basic nigrosine and other like transfer dyes. One.embodi'ment oi the invention is a paper copy sheet having a coating of a relatively nonvolatile solventselected from the group consisting 0!: 11011101038 of Cellbsolve (ethylene glycol ethyl ether) and Oarbitol" (di-ethylene glycol V ethyl ether). 7 The solvent may be applied to the paper sheet and bound thereto by any suitable means known 45 to the art. It may be incorporated with the pulp during the process of manufacture of the 1 paper so that the finished paper the solvent 'uniforrnly'distributed in it. It may also be applied to a paperv sheet coated with-some with otherfconstituents.
the invention:

A design was produced on this'coated copy sheet by typing, using a black carbon paper con-V taininga basic nigrosine dye. This sheet containing the black 'dye design was then applied P to a hectograph blanket ofthe ordinary im consisting, for example. of glue or gelatin, 30 parts by weight, water, parts and glycerin 300 parts, whereupon the-black dye of the'design was largely transferred to the hectograph mass.
Copies were then produced from-the hectogrsphfl mmass in the'conventional manner without application of any solvent or resort to any special procedure.- It was found that atleast thirtythis manner. as

using a carbon paper con ning a mixture of iuchsin and malachite green in proportions of 1:2. The sheet containing the design was then used to obtain copies by the ordinary hectograph process. Similar results as for Example 1 were While has been shown and described certain, embodiments of the invention, it-is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes-in the proportions, and suhsti'tu-j tion of equivalent materials may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the" in view or the prior art.
