To all whom it may concern Bait known that I,-JOSEPH' LAFAVE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bilge-Barrel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved bilge barrel, preferably formed of metal.

It has been found in practice exceedingly difiicult to make a complete bilge barrel of a single sheet of metal which would have the desired strength and durability.

It is therefore an object of this invention to form a bilge barrel of a plurality of sections, distinguished from such barrels as are now on the market and patented, by having the middle section formed with a convex curvature or bilge, in lplace of having it perfectly cylindrical, as as been the case previous to this time.

A further object of this invention is to provide a bilge barrel comprising a plurality of sections, which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and preferably with the middle sec tion, which bears the brunt of the strain, formed of a heavier material than the end sections, whereby lightness and strength are simultaneously obtained.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, it will be seen that the barrel comprises a pair of end sections 1 and 2, spaced apart and connected together by an intermediate or middle section 3. The end sections 1 and 2 are preferably formed of suitable metal, such as sheet metal fabricated in a tapering or conical form, and preferably constructed from a single sheet of metal having its ends secured together to form a seam 4 in any suitable manner, as by means of riveting. These sectionsmay be provided with reinforcing corrugations, such as the annular corrugations 5 shown in the drawings. The end sections 1 and 2 may be secured to the middle section 3 in any suitable manner, as by means of riveting, so as to form circumferential seams, and preferably in such a manner that the seams of the end sections are staggered relative to each other and relative to the seam of middle section. The middle section 3 is preferably composed of heavier metal than the end sections, and is formed with a convex curvature on its outer surface, so as to provide a bilge, .which adds enormously to the strength of the barrel. The middle section 3 is preferably disposed circumjacent the portions of the end sections to which it is directly attached. The end sections may heads 6.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a bilge barrel which will be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and exceedingly strong and durable, and yet not too heavy, as the parts are strengthened where the most strength is needed, and lightened where excessive metal is not necessary.

While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations, and modifications which may come within the scope of the a pended claims.
