In connection with the pursuit of air pollution To avoid this, radiation curing of monomers and polymers has become very important. In the actinic ray curing, a photosensitizer is preferred present to hasten the reaction. Although many photosensitizers are known, new and improved compounds are still being made wanted for this purpose. To the more recently discovered suitable photosensitizers include the aryl dialkoxymethyl ketones. It is everyone difficult to make, and the only method currently available for making them is described in U.S. Patent 2,995,573, according to which acetophenone is reacted with nitrosyl chloride.

Aryldialkoxymethylketones are made by adding an alkyl nitrite with an aryl methyl ketone in the presence of an alcohol and hydrogen chloride under essentially anhydrous Conditions is implemented «The Aryldialkoxymethylketone are excellent photosensitizers for the radiation curing of monomeric and polymeric compositions with actinic rays. They do not yellow and give the composition better resistance than other known ones Photosensitizers.

A new process for the preparation of the above-described Äpyldialkoxymethylketone has now been found. The alkyl nitrite compounds suitable for this process are known; they contain about 1-12 carbon atoms, preferably about 1-6 carbon atoms, in the alkyl group. Many alkyl nitrites are commercially available and can easily be made by reacting an alkali metal nitrite with an alcohol in contact with a strong acid such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. Examples of alkyl nitrites are: methyl nitrite, ethyl nitrite, propyl nitrite, isopropyl nitrite, hexyl nitrite, decyl nitrite, 2-ethylhexyl nitrite, dodecyl nitrite and other linear and branched alkyl nitrites.

In the case of the aryl methyl ketones suitable for the reaction according to the invention these are also known compounds. The ketones suitable for this process are determined by the general formula shown:

The normal alcohols are preferred. These compounds are known and are commercially available; examples of these are: methanol, propanol, ethanol, isopropanol, the Butanols, pentanols, kexanols, heptanols, octanols, nonanols, decanols, undecanols and dodecanols.

Strong acids such as hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, boron trifluoride and boron trifluoride etherates are suitable as catalysts for the reaction. Other known strong acids such as sulfuric acid are less effective.

ImThe reaction is preferably carried out under anhydrous conditions in order to avoid the formation of by-products and undesired side reactions. Theoretically, 1 mole of alkyl nitrite is reacted with 1 mole of aryl methyl ketone and 1 mole of alcohol to produce the aryl dialkoxymethyl ketones. in the

Der Katalysator kann in einer Konzentration von etwa 0,-1 - 100 Gew.-% der Reaktionsmischung, vorzugsweise etwa 5-25 Gev.-%, verwendet werden.however, it is generally preferred to use some reactants in excess in order to achieve complete conversion. For example, about 1-10 moles or more, preferably about 1-3 moles, of alkyl nitrite and about 1-50 moles or more, preferably about 2-15 moles, of alcohol can be used per mole of aryl methyl ketone. The catalyst can be used in a concentration of about 0.1-100% by weight of the reaction mixture, preferably about 5-25 % by weight, can be used.

The reaction may or at a temperature of about -20 to 100 0 C higher, preferably about 0 to 50 0 C is performed. It can be carried out at any pressure, whether subatmospheric, atmospheric or superatraospheric. The reaction time is of course different and depends on the particular reactants, the temperature, the pressure and the amount charged. In general, however, the reaction is complete within a few hours, and sometimes it is almost complete once the reactants have been mixed together. If an excess of alcohol is used, the alcohol can serve as a solvent for the reaction. However, any desired inert, anhydrous, organic solvent can also be used in the reaction mixture.

In one embodiment of the present invention, the method can conveniently be carried out so that the Alkyl nitrite is generated in a separate reaction vessel and then under essentially anhydrous conditions into the Reaction mixture. from aryl methyl ketone, alcohol and catalyst is distilled. Optionally, the alkyl nitrite can also be condensed and then added to the reaction mixture, optionally diluted with a solvent. In both cases it is important that the conditions be substantially anhydrous to rule. When the reaction is complete, the aryl dialkoxymethyl ketone becomes obtained by conventional methods such as extraction, distillation or the like.

The aryldialkoxymethyl ketones prepared according to the invention are suitable as photosensitizers for compositions which are radiation-curable with actinic light and can be used in concentrations of about 0.1-25 %, preferably about 0.5-10%, which are usual for photosensitizers. It has been found that these compounds cure rapidly and, moreover, do not cause yellowing when added to white pigmented compositions such as paints or coatings. The coloring and coating compositions can, of course, contain other additives normally present in such compositions, including other photosensitizers.

*EPOA * Acrylatderivat von Sojaölepoxyd mit durchschnittlich etwa 2,1 Acrylylgruppen.* EPOA * Acrylate derivative of soybean oil epoxy with average about 2.1 acrylyl groups.

All of the above compositions were cured and it was found that using dialkoxyacetophenone obtained gel-free compositions as a photosensitizer when the composition was allowed to stand, which was not the case when using Trigonal-14. Trigonal-14 is a mixture of the η-butyl and isobutyl ethers of benzoin in a ratio of 1: 1. It has also been found that when benzoin is used as a photosensitizer, the Composition gelled during the mixing process.
